What is a MICROBOARD?
A MICROBOARD is a nonprofit
organization formed by a small ("micro") board of
directors. The sole purpose of the microboards
is to serve and provide supports to one named individual who has a
disability.
MICROBOARDS are empowering to the
individual through their customized plan of care, which comes from the
person's own desires and wishes. Some microboards
choose to take their responsibilities further by contracting with the
state as a provider for their individual's services.
MICROBOARDS are operating in Tennessee, Colorado,
New Hampshire, Nevada,
Oregon, and Virginia. The Tennessee
Microboard Association is helping Iowa, Georgia,
and now Texas establish
MICROBOARDS.

Why do individuals and
families create Microboards?
1. They want to
create a formal support system for the long haul using natural and
community services. The Real Life program already
coordinates Support Networks; microboards
provide a legal basis to be involved.
2. They want to
create a means to build resources to meet unexpected needs or desires.
3. They want to
control their attendant care staff and hire on a more
individualized basis--possibly hiring family members.
